It seems like everyone in the oncoming lane just uses their highs in the fog, turns them off when they get close to me, don’t seem to notice that it’s easier to see without them, and then puts them back on.
Have I just driven weird cars my entire life where high beams that make fog worse are the exception?
As an aside, my Jag’a rear fog lights are my favorite car feature of all time they get their own button(!) and who doesn’t like extra visibility in the fog and rain? I don’t know why every car doesn’t have them.
I don’t know why there’s weird headlight ghosting over the turn signal.

I also have buttons for the front and rear dogs. they are great in any sort of inclement weather with low visibility.

High beams make no sense in fog. That’s it.

rectangle fogs best fogs
For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why the fogs light on the dash never lit up when the fogs were on. It took me almost 5 years of ownership before i realized the light on the dash was for rear fogs which the us never got.

I love them so much, they’re so simple but provide for much peace of mind.

I’ll give you rectangle fogs, but I’m afraid that I have to insist on oval turn signals.

High beams are supposed to be bad in the fog since the light is projected forward the fog projects it straight back into your eyes. Fog lights are made for the fog because they send light in many directions to illuminate the fog and not blind the driver.

People are dumb and just go: “This fog is making it harder to see. My high beams make it brighter, I’ll turn them on” and that’s the end of the thought process. People also turn their high beams on in the rain waay too much. Honestly I’m almost more surprised that so many people are aware that they even have high beams, while not knowing that using them in fog is idiotic.

I’m pretty sure that if we were supposed to use high beams in fog, the fog lights would actually come on. The light just reflects off of the fog worse with high beams on.

This is the only explanation that makes sense to me.
I think people tend to overuse high beams in general. I tend to use mine maybe once or twice a week if it’s pitch black and there aren’t any street lights.
The only time I used to use my high beams regularly was when I used to drive in the very early morning, but that was because I realized that people in the oncoming lane are more likely to turn their highs off if your turn yours off first and make them conscious of it.

It’s so well-lit 90% of where I live that I essentially only use them when I’m out of town

I tried it recently. Drove in pitch black foggy weather. Front fogs on, and suddenly no traffic in sight. Let’s try the high beams. Result: visibility reduced due to light being deflected by the fog. So I switched the high beams off. Are people really too stupid to notice?
Rear fogs are mandatory in Europe. All cars have rear fogs here. They’re only to be used when visibility is really bad.
